In May 2020, Cognizant Softvision’s Ioana Mihăilescu presented a webinar on how to become a successful web programmer. In this interview, the passionate UI Developer discusses the experience of leading a webinar and shares some insider’s tips for those looking to start a career as a programmer.
Q: What is your experience with webinars?
A: My first experience with webinars was in September 2019, during Programmers’ Week and I was a bit nervous because it was something new. It wasn’t fully a webinar, because we had people in the audience as well, but it was the closest experience I had with webinars. I like to interact with people during my presentations and I really value that instant feedback people have, and both a live presentation and an online platform give me this opportunity.
Q: What do you believe are the benefits of webinars for students?
A: The fact that they are very easy to take part in, no matter where you are, is maybe the biggest advantage. It is a comfortable way of learning new things, a modern way of educating yourself and finding more about what’s happening in an area they are interested in.
Also, because it’s online, every question they have is taken into account and answered. So, it’s an easy comfortable way to grow your knowledge and to have your curiosities answered.
Q: What was the theme you chose to talk about and what was the purpose of the webinar?
A: I chose to talk about “how to be a successful programmer” and maybe the title can be a bit misleading. It’s about finding YOUR path and your own success.
From my experience, I know how hard and confusing it can be to find the right career for you, and even once you know you want to be a software developer, the possibilities are endless. The software industry is so wide and it can be very confusing and overwhelming, especially for a beginner. The purpose was to find your own programming path, based on your values, your skills, and your goals. It’s meant to help people in their journey of finding their “success.”
Q: What were the most popular questions asked during the Q&A session? What question did you find most relevant?
A: The questions were pretty different, but I think most of them were about priorities and what are the most sought-after programming languages on the market.
All the questions were relevant, but I would say that one of my favorites was whether to “focus on a big thing or more little things?” because very often we start a lot of projects and set up a lot of goals, but we don’t take any of them to a “next-level.” We just start them, but we don’t grow them.
Q: What do you think the students should remember from this webinar that might shape their future career development?
A: Everybody is different, and that’s a good thing.
Don’t look for comfort, look for growth.
Money is important, but not the most important.
Maybe these are clichés, but that only makes them more real. The fact that we are different, helps us build our own journey. We can’t use the same “recipe” for being successful. Being comfortable feels good, but just for a short time. Having the courage to grow feels amazing and it gives you a boost of energy and confidence that everyone needs.
Q: What is the conclusion of your web programming webinar dedicated to students?
A: In order to have a successful career, you need to know yourself, your values, what motivates you, and set some goals. Trust yourself, work hard, but smart, don’t get settle and enjoy the ride!
